On 14th November, 1914, the 1st Royal Fusiliers battalion of 17 Brigade, 6th Division, took over some trenches about 2 miles south-east of Chapelle d’Armentières where they remained until relieved on 21st November. The battalion diary entry for 17th November recorded that a corporal was killed by a chance shot when returning to the line with supplies. The records show that Robert Marvin was the only corporal from 1st Royal Fusiliers killed on that day.
